A World Heritage Site in Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture, is famous as the shrine where Tokugawa Ieyasu, the hero who ended the Warring States period, is enshrined.
Toshogu Shrine, which is made up of more than 12 buildings, is surrounded by beautiful nature and features countless wood carvings and large amounts of gold foil, a technique not seen anywhere else in Japan, where simplicity has traditionally been emphasized.
Do not miss the symbol of peace “Sleeping Cat”, and the “Three Monkeys” with the “see no evil, hear no evil and speak no evil” poses! The buildings blend into the seasonal scenery, and are especially recommended in November when the leaves change color.
